Facebook cover photo size at a glance
| Item | Size | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Recommended upload | 851 × 315 px | About 2.7:1. The size most guides give for profiles and Pages. |
| Shown on desktop | 820 × 312 px | Wide and short. |
| Shown on phones | 640 × 360 px | 16:9, taller, so the left and right edges are cropped. |
| High-density screens | 1640 × 624 px | Twice the size, same shape, for a sharper cover. |
| Safe zone | About 640 × 312 px, centered | Keep text and logos inside it. |
| Both devices in one size | 820 × 360 px | Some designers use it so nothing important is cut. |
These are common sizes as of 2026. Facebook can change them, and personal profiles and Pages use the same cover size.
Why your cover looks different on a phone
The desktop cover is about 2.6:1 and the phone cover is 16:9. A phone shows the same picture taller, so it scales the image up to fill the height and cuts off the sides. Anything near the left or right edge can disappear on mobile, and the profile picture covers part of the bottom-left corner. Plan for both by working inside the safe zone.
How to make a Facebook cover photo
- Drop your picture on the box above, or paste it with Ctrl+V.
- Keep 851 × 315, or choose 1640 × 624 for a sharper cover.
- Choose Crop to fill and the part of the picture to keep, or Fit with bars or blurred background if you cannot lose any of it.
- Look at the desktop and phone previews. Switch the profile picture overlap on to see what it hides.
- Download the cover and upload it to your profile or Page.
Design tips for a cover
- Put the name, logo and message in the middle, inside the safe zone.
- Keep the bottom-left clear. The profile picture sits there.
- Use a wide photo or a simple graphic. Busy detail is lost at small sizes.
- Use JPG for photos and PNG for text and flat logos. Facebook compresses images, so a clean file at the right size looks best.
- Match the colors of your cover and your profile picture so the page looks together.
- Check the page on your own phone after you upload.
Common mistakes
- Treating 851 × 315 as the display size. It is the upload size, and the edges are cropped on phones.
- Text at the far left or right. It is cut off on mobile.
- A tiny picture stretched wide. The result is blurry. The list tells you when an image was enlarged.
- A logo in the bottom-left. The profile picture covers it.
