Instagram highlight cover size
| Detail | Specification |
|---|---|
| Size | 1080 x 1920 pixels |
| Aspect ratio | 9:16 |
| How it is shown | As a small circle under your bio |
| Formats | PNG or JPG |
A cover is the same size as a Story. Instagram cuts a circle from the middle of it, so the top and the bottom of a tall cover are not visible. The small circle under your bio shows only a part of the picture.
How the circle crop works
The circle is as wide as the picture and sits in the middle, so it takes the middle 1080 x 1080 part of a 1080 x 1920 cover, with the corners cut off. Keep the design well inside the circle, and make a symbol or a letter much smaller than the full width. The tool shows the circle and a small preview of how it looks on your profile.
How to make a highlight cover
- Choose a background colour, or two colours for a gradient.
- Type a letter, a number, a symbol or an emoji, or upload a small icon.
- Change the size of the symbol until it sits well inside the circle.
- Download the PNG.
How to add a cover to a highlight
Save the picture to your phone. On your profile, press and hold the highlight, choose Edit highlight, then Edit cover, and pick the picture from your phone. The names of the menus change from time to time, so look for the edit and cover options.
Design tips
- Use one style for all the covers, with the same colours and the same kind of icon.
- Use simple shapes. Small details are lost in a circle that is shown so small.
- Keep enough contrast between the symbol and the background.
- Use a short name under each highlight, and an icon that matches it.
