How it works
Each pick chooses uniformly from the letters that are left in the pool, so every letter has the same chance. The tool uses your browser secure random number generator, not a simple pseudo-random formula, and avoids the slight bias that comes from naive rounding.
Options
- How many: pick from 1 to 12 letters in one go.
- No repeats: when ticked, a letter cannot appear twice in the same pick.
- Exclude letters: type letters such as Q X Z to remove awkward ones.
- Case: show capitals, lowercase, or a random mix.
Ways to use it
Teachers use a random letter to start a spelling or vocabulary round. Families and friends use it for category games, where everyone must name a food, animal or city that starts with the letter. Writers use it for prompts, such as a character name or a word that starts with the letter. It also helps with quick decisions, such as assigning people a letter to work from.
Example
Exclude Q, X and Z, set the count to 1, and press Pick. You might get M. Press again for a fresh letter, and the history shows your earlier picks.
Only want vowels? Try the random vowel picker. For consonants, use the random consonant picker. Need many letters at once? The random letter list generator makes up to 1000. To see how often letters appear in real text, try the letter frequency counter.
