How to convert HEIC to JPG
- Drop your HEIC files on the box, choose them with Choose images, or paste with Ctrl+V.
- Pick a quality if you want a smaller file. 90 is a good default.
- Each photo is converted as soon as it is added. The list shows the size before and after.
- Click Download next to a file, or Download all as ZIP.
Why your iPhone photos are HEIC
Since iOS 11, iPhones and iPads save photos in HEIC by default. HEIC keeps about the same visible quality as JPG in roughly half the space, which saves storage. The problem is compatibility: older Windows versions, many websites, email forms, print shops and some apps do not accept HEIC. A JPG opens everywhere.
What changes when you convert HEIC to JPG
- The file gets bigger. A JPG of the same photo is usually 1.5 to 2 times the size of the HEIC at similar quality.
- Quality is kept at a high level. JPG is lossy, so a tiny amount of detail is lost, but at quality 90 or more the difference is not visible in a photo.
- The photo is turned the right way up. Rotation is applied to the pixels, so it shows correctly in every program.
- Metadata is not copied. The date taken, camera model and GPS location are left out of the JPG. This is good for privacy, but it also means photo apps will sort the file by its download date.
- Live Photos and depth data become a still. Only the main picture is saved.
Prefer to avoid converting?
On the iPhone, open Settings, Camera, Formats and choose Most Compatible. New photos are then saved as JPG. Photos you already took stay HEIC, so you still need a converter for those. The HEIC format guide shows every option.
Privacy
Your photos are converted in your browser and are never uploaded. In Safari the conversion uses the browser itself. In Chrome, Edge and Firefox a small decoder file is downloaded once from this site the first time you add a HEIC file, and then the photos are decoded on your own device.
