Instagram carousel size
| Slide shape | Aspect ratio | Size in pixels |
|---|---|---|
| Portrait | 4:5 | 1080 x 1350 |
| Square | 1:1 | 1080 x 1080 |
| Grid | 3:4 | 1080 x 1440 |
All the slides of a carousel should have the same size. The first slide usually sets the shape for the whole carousel, so a slide with another shape is cropped to fit. A carousel can hold up to 20 pictures or videos at the time of writing. The limit has changed before, so check the app.
Which size to choose
- 4:5 portrait. The tallest of the usual shapes in the feed, and the best choice for text slides and photos.
- 1:1 square. The simplest shape for graphics.
- 3:4. Matches the profile grid thumbnail in recent versions of Instagram.
Tool 1: split one wide photo into seamless slides
A seamless carousel is one wide picture that continues from slide to slide, so people swipe through it. To make one:
- Choose What do you want to do: Split one wide photo into slides.
- Open a wide photo, or a long graphic made in a design tool.
- Choose the slide size and the number of slides from 2 to 10. The dashed lines show where the picture is cut.
- Download the slides one by one or all together in a ZIP, and upload them in the same order.
Panoramas, skylines, long tables of food and timelines all work well. Keep important faces and text away from the cuts.
Tool 2: resize several photos to one size
Choose Resize several photos to the same size, and add up to 20 photos. Each photo is fitted to the slide size with the method you choose: fill (crop), a blurred background or solid bars. This gives all the slides the same size and format, so none is cropped by surprise. Download them in one ZIP.
Carousel design tips
- Make the first slide the strongest, because it is the one seen in the feed.
- Use the same margins, fonts and colours on every slide.
- Keep text at least 60 to 80 pixels from the edges.
- Export every slide in the same format and at the same size.
