Aspect ratios
An aspect ratio is the shape of a picture: its width compared with its height. 9:16 is tall, like a phone screen. 4:5 is a little taller than wide. 1:1 is a square, and 1.91:1 is wide. To work out a size for any ratio, use the aspect ratio calculator.
Safe zones
- Stories. Keep text and logos about 250 pixels away from the top and 250 to 340 pixels away from the bottom.
- Reels. Keep them away from the top, the bottom and the right edge, where the caption, audio and buttons appear.
- Profile grid. Recent versions of Instagram show thumbnails in a 3:4 shape. Keep the main part of a picture in the middle.
- Circles. Profile pictures and highlight covers are shown as circles, so the corners are cut.
File types and size
- Photos: JPG for photos, PNG for graphics with text. Instagram compresses every upload.
- Video: MP4 or MOV. Stories take clips up to 60 seconds. Reels take longer videos, up to 3 minutes at the time of writing.
- Upload a picture that is already the right size. Pictures narrower than 1080 pixels are enlarged and look soft, and wider ones are scaled down.
Choosing between post formats
A portrait post of 4:5 takes up more room in the feed than a square or landscape post. A square post is the simplest and works well for graphics. A landscape post is the widest and also the most cropped in the profile grid. A carousel usually follows the shape of its first picture, so use the same size for every slide.
