Crop a JPG online
Open a JPG or JPEG photo, drag the crop box over the part you want, and save the result as a JPG. The settings are ready for photos: the output format is JPG, quality is 92 and a white background fills any transparent area. You can still switch to PNG or WebP at any time.
JPG quality after cropping
JPG is a lossy format, so a cropped picture is encoded again and a little detail is lost with each save. At quality 90 to 95 the change is very hard to see. Lower values give smaller files with more visible blocks around edges and text. Keep your original file, and crop from the original each time rather than cropping a crop.
A truly lossless JPG crop is possible only on the block grid of the picture, usually multiples of 8 or 16 pixels, with tools such as jpegtran. This page prefers exact positions over that limit.
Set a maximum file size
Many forms and portals reject photos above a limit such as 100 KB or 500 KB. Type the limit in Maximum file size (KB). The tool tries different qualities and keeps the highest quality that fits. If the limit cannot be reached, make the output smaller with the Resize output width box, or use the image compressor.
Transparent pictures
JPG cannot store transparency. If you open a PNG or WebP with transparent areas, they are filled with the Background colour (white by default) when you save as JPG.
