Instagram image formats
| Format | Ratio | Pixels |
|---|---|---|
| Square post | 1:1 | 1080 x 1080 |
| Portrait post | 4:5 | 1080 x 1350 |
| Grid size | 3:4 | 1080 x 1440 |
| Landscape post | 1.91:1 | 1080 x 566 |
| Story and Reel | 9:16 | 1080 x 1920 |
Instagram changes its formats from time to time, so check the sizes shown in the app. Pictures wider than 1080 pixels are scaled down by Instagram, so 1080 pixels wide is a safe choice.
How to crop a photo for Instagram
- Open your photo.
- Choose the Instagram format. The box locks to that ratio.
- Move the box so that the subject is well placed. The thirds lines on the box help with composition.
- Select Crop image and download the JPG, ready to upload.
Choosing a format
- A portrait post takes more room in the feed than a square one.
- Recent versions of Instagram show the profile grid in a taller shape than a square, so keep the main subject near the middle of the picture.
- Stories and Reels are full screen. Keep text and faces away from the very top and bottom, where the interface sits over the picture.
