What this number to words converter does

Type a number such as 2500000 or 25,00,000 and the converter writes it in words: twenty-five lakh in the Indian system and two million five hundred thousand in the International system. Both readings are shown together, so you never have to guess which one a document needs. You can also type a short form such as 2.5 crore, 5 lakh or 3 million, and the tool turns it into the full number first.

Indian system and International system

The two systems group digits differently, and they have different names for large values.

  • Indian system: the first group has three digits, then every group has two. The names are thousand, lakh (1,00,000), crore (1,00,00,000), arab (1,00,00,00,000), kharab and neel. It is used in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka.
  • International system: every group has three digits. The names are thousand, million, billion and trillion.

One lakh is one hundred thousand. One crore is one hundred lakh, which is ten million. For the full story, read the lakh and crore guide.

Decimals, currency and cheque style

  • Decimals without a currency are read digit by digit: 12.34 becomes twelve point three four.

The tool knows 31 currencies, including USD, EUR, GBP, INR, PKR, AED, SAR and many more. Amounts are rounded to the number of decimals that the currency uses (three for the Kuwaiti dinar and the Omani rial, none for the yen and the won).
  • Add Only to write the amount the way banks want it: Twenty-five Lakh Rupees Only. See the cheque amount in words page.
  • Use and for British English: one hundred and ten thousand.
