Top words and coverage
Pick a list size, such as the top 10, 20 or 50. Below the table you will see how much of your text those words make up. In most writing, a short list of words covers a surprisingly large share, because common words repeat constantly.
Reveal the real topic
The top of a normal list is full of words like the, and and of. Tick Exclude stop words and the list changes to the subject words: the names, ideas and terms the text is actually about.
What to look for
- One content word far ahead of the others may be overused.
- A topic word missing from the top may mean the text drifts off subject.
- Similar words, such as run and running, are counted separately, so check variants by eye.
Example uses
Check an essay for repetition, find the main themes in a speech, or see which words dominate a set of customer reviews. Paste several reviews together to get a quick overview.
For the complete list use the word frequency counter, or build a custom filter with the stop word version. The guide explains how the counting works.
