How to make a JPG background transparent
- Add a JPG. The most common color along the edges is picked as the background.
- If the wrong color was picked, click the background in the preview.
- Raise Tolerance until the whole background is gone, and Soft edge until the edges look smooth.
- Check the result on a dark background, then click Download PNG.
Why a JPG has no transparency
The JPG format stores only color, not transparency. Every pixel is solid, so a logo on a white JPG always has a white box around it. PNG stores an extra value for every pixel that says how see-through it is. This tool sets that value from the color of each pixel.
The settings
- Color to remove: the background color. Click the preview or use the color box.
- Tolerance: how different a pixel may be from that color and still be removed. JPG compression leaves small color variations, so a little tolerance is almost always needed.
- Soft edge: pixels just outside the tolerance become partly transparent, and the background color is taken out of them. This removes the light halo around dark shapes.
- Remove: Background only clears the color that touches the edges of the image and leaves the same color inside the object, such as the white of an eye. Everywhere clears the color in the whole image, which suits signatures and text with holes, such as the inside of an O.
- Trim empty edges: crops the PNG to the visible content.
What it works best for
- Logos and icons on a plain background.
- Scanned or photographed signatures and stamps. Use Everywhere so the paper inside letters disappears too.
- Product photos taken on a white or green backdrop.
- Clip art, diagrams and screenshots.
It removes one color, so it is not made for portraits or photos with a busy background. For those, a tool that detects the subject works better.
Tips for clean edges
- Use the largest JPG you have. Compression noise is smaller relative to the shape.
- Raise Tolerance in small steps. When parts of the object start to disappear, go back a step and use Soft edge instead.
- Check the result on black and on the color it will be used on.
