JPEG, JPG, JFIF and JPE are the same format
JPEG is the name of the format. The extension is .jpg on files from older Windows versions, which only allowed three letters, and .jpeg on most others. Windows and Chrome sometimes save downloaded images as .jfif, and .jpe is an old variant. All of them hold the same kind of image, so the converter treats them the same way.
| Extension | Where you see it | Converts to PNG here? |
|---|---|---|
| .jpg | Cameras, Windows, most websites | Yes |
| .jpeg | Mac, Linux, phones, email attachments | Yes |
| .jfif | Images saved from Chrome or Edge on Windows | Yes |
| .jpe | Old software and archives | Yes |
How to convert JPEG to PNG
- Drop the .jpeg files on the box or choose them from your device.
- They are converted at full size as soon as they are added.
- Download each PNG, or all of them in one ZIP. A file called photo.jpeg becomes photo.png.
Rotation and EXIF data
Phones save photos sideways and add a note in the EXIF data that says how to turn them. Some programs ignore that note, so the photo looks rotated. The converter applies the rotation to the pixels, so the PNG is the right way up everywhere. Other EXIF data, such as the camera model and GPS location, is not copied.
A .jfif file will not open?
Some programs do not know the .jfif extension even though the image inside is a normal JPEG. Converting it to PNG gives a file every program opens. Renaming .jfif to .jpg also works if you prefer to keep a JPEG.
