How to find the tip percentage
Divide the tip by the bill, and multiply by 100.
tip percentage = tip / bill x 100
If the bill was 80.00 and you paid 92.00 in all, the tip was 12.00, and 12 / 80 x 100 = 15%. Choose I know the total I paid, and the calculator takes the bill off the total for you.
Tip amounts at common percentages
| Tip percentage | Tip on 100 | Total on 100 | Multiply the bill by |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10% | 10.00 | 110.00 | 1.10 |
| 15% | 15.00 | 115.00 | 1.15 |
| 18% | 18.00 | 118.00 | 1.18 |
| 20% | 20.00 | 120.00 | 1.20 |
| 25% | 25.00 | 125.00 | 1.25 |
To get the total in one step, multiply the bill by 1 plus the tip percentage as a decimal. For a 15% tip, multiply by 1.15.
The closest common rate
When you enter your own figures, the calculator also tells you which of the usual rates, 10%, 15%, 18%, 20% and 25%, is closest to what you tipped. Below the result is a chart of the tip and the total on your bill at each rate.
Is the tip too low or too high
That depends on where you are and on the service. A tip that looks low in one country can be generous in another, and a bill that already has a service charge may not need a tip at all. Use the percentage as a guide, and see how to calculate a tip for notes on customs.
