How to split a bill with a tip
Add the tip to the bill, then divide the total by the number of people.
each person pays = bill x (1 + tip percentage / 100) / people
A bill of 120.00 with an 18% tip and 4 people is 120 x 1.18 = 141.60, and 141.60 / 4 = 35.40 each.
Round each share
Odd amounts are awkward when people pay in cash or send money one by one. Choose to round each share up to the next 1, 5 or 10 units. The calculator shows how much extra is collected, which becomes part of the tip, so the group knows what it is giving.
Tips on splitting a bill
- Decide before the bill comes whether to split evenly or by what each person ordered. If the orders differ a lot, use tip by person.
- Check whether a service charge is already on the bill. If it is, set the tip to 0 or to a small extra amount.
- For a large group, some restaurants add a service charge automatically. Look for it before you add a tip.
Table of tip rates
Below the result, a table shows what each person pays at tip rates from 10% to 25%, with your rounding applied. It helps a group agree on a tip.
