What it counts
Every character in your text is counted: letters, digits, punctuation and, if you choose, spaces. Results update as you type and show the count, the share of the total, and a bar so the most common characters stand out.
Common uses
Check text for stray symbols, compare two documents, clean data before an import, verify a translation, or solve cryptogram puzzles. Use the options to count only the character types you need.
Unicode note
Characters are counted as Unicode code points. An emoji built from several parts, such as a flag or a skin-tone variant, can count as more than one character.
How to use it
- Paste or type your text into the box.
- Choose which character types to count: letters, digits, punctuation or spaces.
- Read the table, which is sorted by count, or switch to alphabetical order.
- Click Copy as CSV to move the results into a spreadsheet.
Example
In the text hello world, the letter l appears 3 times, o appears 2 times, and every other letter appears once. With spaces counted, the space is one more character.
