Letters only
This version counts letters and nothing else. In typical English text, E is the most common letter, followed by T, A and O. The English average column shows the expected share for each letter so you can see where your text differs.
Where it helps
Letter frequency is the first tool for breaking simple substitution ciphers and cryptogram puzzles. It also helps with word games, spelling worksheets and comparing languages.
Accented letters
Letters with accents, such as é or ñ, are counted as their own letters. They have no English average, so that column stays empty for them.
English letter frequencies
The most common letters in English are E (12.7 percent), T (9.1), A (8.2), O (7.5), I (7.0), N (6.7), S (6.3), H (6.1) and R (6.0). The least common are Z, Q, X and J. The comparison column uses a standard English sample, so real texts will differ a little.
How to use it for a cipher
Paste the coded text, then compare the most frequent cipher letters with E, T and A. If one cipher letter dominates, it is often E. Combine this with common short words to test each guess.
