How to calculate a tip
Multiply the bill by the tip percentage divided by 100. The total is the bill plus the tip.
tip = bill x percentage / 100
total = bill + tip
On a bill of 85.50 with an 18% tip, the tip is 85.50 x 0.18 = 15.39 and the total is 100.89.
How to use the calculator
- Enter the bill amount.
- Pick a tip percentage with the buttons, or type your own.
- Enter the number of people if you are splitting the bill.
- Choose a rounding option if you want a round number.
Rounding
- Round the tip up raises the tip to the next whole amount.
- Round the total up raises the total to the next whole amount, and the tip takes up the difference.
- Round each person's share up raises what each person pays to the next whole amount, which makes it easy to pay in cash.
When rounding changes the tip, the calculator shows the tip percentage that you really pay.
Quick ways to work out a tip
- 10%: move the decimal point one place to the left. 10% of 85.50 is 8.55.
- 15%: add half of the 10% amount to the 10% amount.
- 20%: double the 10% amount.
How much to tip
Customs differ from country to country and from place to place. Table service in the United States is commonly tipped at 15% to 20%. In the UK, 10% to 12.5% is common, and it is often added to the bill as a service charge. In many other countries a small tip, or none, is usual. Look at your bill before you tip: a service charge may already be included, and in that case you can enter 0 or a small extra amount.
