WhatsApp does not publish an official pixel size for the DP. It accepts almost any picture and asks you to crop it to a square, so the sizes above are the common, practical ones as of 2026.

The best WhatsApp DP size

Use 500 × 500 pixels, a square. WhatsApp displays your DP as a circle, from a tiny round icon in the chat list to a large picture when someone opens it. A 500 × 500 square stays sharp at all of those sizes without making a big file. If you want extra sharpness, make it 1000 × 1000, which has the same shape.

How to make a WhatsApp DP

  1. Drop a photo on the box above, or paste it with Ctrl+V.
  2. Drag the picture so the face or logo sits in the middle of the circle.
  3. Use the zoom slider or your mouse wheel to make it bigger or smaller.
  4. Check the two previews: a large profile view and a tiny one like the chat list.
  5. Choose 500 × 500, pick JPG for a photo or PNG for a logo, and click Download.
  6. Send the file to your phone, then set it as your DP.

DP without cropping

Do you want the whole photo in your DP, not a cut-out of the middle? Change the Fit option to Whole photo inside the circle. The picture is made smaller so every part of it stays inside the circle, and the space around it is filled with a color you choose, or with a blurred copy of the photo. This is the way to set a full-body, group or landscape photo as a DP.

How to set your DP on WhatsApp

Open WhatsApp, go to Settings (on Android use the three dot menu first), tap your photo, then choose Edit or the camera icon and pick the picture from your gallery. Crop it if WhatsApp asks and save. The menu names change between versions, so look for the profile photo option if you do not see these.

Who can see your DP

In Settings, Privacy, Profile photo, you can choose who sees it: everyone, your contacts, your contacts except some people, or nobody. A new DP follows that setting.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best WhatsApp DP size?

Use a square of 500 x 500 pixels. WhatsApp shows it as a circle.

What is the minimum WhatsApp DP size?

WhatsApp publishes no official minimum. Pictures under about 192 x 192 pixels look blurry or may be refused, so use 500 x 500.

How do I set a full photo as a WhatsApp DP without cropping?

Use the Whole photo inside the circle option. It makes the photo smaller so all of it stays in the circle, with bars or a blurred background around it.

Is the WhatsApp DP round?

Yes. You upload a square and WhatsApp displays it as a circle, so keep the important part in the middle.

Why is my WhatsApp DP blurry?

The picture was too small, or it was compressed by sending it through a chat. Use the original at 500 x 500 or larger.

Is my photo uploaded to your server?

No. The editor works in your browser and the photo never leaves your device.
