WhatsApp DP Size: Profile Picture, Status, Group, Business and Sticker Sizes

The short answer

WhatsApp has no official pixel size for these. It accepts almost any picture and asks you to crop it to a square. Very small pictures, under about 192 × 192 pixels, look blurry or may be refused.

Link previews and sharing
- Link preview image: 1200 × 630 pixels, JPG, under about 300 KB. This is the Open Graph image of the page you share.
- Photos in a chat: WhatsApp compresses them. To send a sharp original, send the picture as a document.
- Chat media limit: about 16 MB for photos and videos. Documents can be much larger.
Why your DP looks blurry or cropped
- Blurry: the source was small, or it came from a chat and was already compressed. Use the original at 500 × 500 or larger.
- Cropped: the DP is a square shown as a circle, so a tall or wide photo loses its edges. Make it square yourself, or fit the whole photo inside the circle with the DP maker.
- Face too small: the chat list picture is tiny. Zoom in until the face fills at least half of the circle.
How to change your DP
Open WhatsApp, go to Settings (on Android use the three dot menu first), tap your photo, choose Edit or the camera icon, pick the picture, crop it and save. The menu names change between versions.
Privacy settings for your DP and status
- Profile photo: in Settings, Privacy, choose who sees it: everyone, my contacts, my contacts except, or nobody.
- Status: in the same Privacy menu, choose who sees your status updates.
How to export pictures that stay sharp
- Make a DP at 500 × 500 or 1000 × 1000, and a status at 1080 × 1920.
- Export photos as JPG at quality 85 to 90, and use PNG for logos and text.
- Keep stickers and link previews under their size limits with the target size option, or with the image compressor.
- Send the finished file to your phone as a document or by email, so it is not compressed again.

- Square 500 × 500 or larger for a DP, with the face in the middle.
- Nothing important in the corners of a DP.
- 9:16 for a status, with text away from the top and bottom.
- 512 × 512 transparent WebP under 100 KB for a sticker.
