|---|---|---|---|
| Image status | 1080 × 1920 px | 9:16 | Fills a phone screen. Other shapes can be cropped or shown with empty bars. |
| Video status | 1080 × 1920 or 720 × 1280 px | 9:16 | MP4. About 30 seconds per clip, and longer videos are split. Commonly cited limits can change. |
| Text status | no image | - | Up to about 700 characters, on a color you choose. |

These are common sizes and limits as of 2026. WhatsApp can change them.
The best WhatsApp status size
Use 1080 × 1920 pixels, a tall 9:16 shape. It matches the phone screen, so the picture fills it with no empty bars. Photos from a camera are usually 4:3 or 3:4, so a wide or square photo needs to be fitted first. This tool crops it to the frame or keeps the whole picture with bars or a blurred background.
Safe zone: what the app covers
When someone views your status, WhatsApp shows a progress bar and your name at the top, and a reply field at the bottom. Text and logos in those areas are hidden or hard to read. Keep them in the middle of the picture. The picture shows an approximate guide, not an official WhatsApp measurement, and the tool draws the same guide over your image.
How to make a WhatsApp status image
- Drop a photo on the box above, or paste it with Ctrl+V.
- Choose Fill the frame, then drag and zoom to place it. Or choose a fit that keeps the whole photo.
- Keep text and logos inside the dashed box.
- Pick JPG for photos or PNG for text and flat colors. Set a size limit for a small file.
- Download the image, send it to your phone and add it as a status.
How to post a status
Open the Updates or Status tab in WhatsApp, tap the plus or camera icon, choose your picture from the gallery and tap send. The menu names change between versions, so look for the status or updates option.
Design tips for a status
- One idea per status, with large, high contrast text.
- Keep the main subject in the middle of the screen.
- Use a vertical photo, or fit a horizontal one with a blurred background so it still fills the screen.
- Add a short call to action, such as your offer or a phone number, but not at the very top or bottom.
- Post several short statuses instead of one crowded picture.
Common mistakes
- A landscape photo as it is. It becomes a small strip with empty bars. Use the blurred background fit.
- Text at the very top or bottom. The progress bar and reply field cover it.
- A blurry status. A very small picture is stretched. Use at least 720 × 1280.
- Sending the picture through a chat first. WhatsApp compresses it. Use the original file.
