How to convert HEIC to PNG
- Drop the HEIC files on the box or choose them.
- Each one is converted at full size straight away.
- Download the PNG files one by one or as a ZIP.
When to choose PNG over JPG
- You will edit the photo several times. PNG does not lose more detail with each save.
- The picture holds text, lines or a screenshot. PNG keeps edges sharp where JPG blurs them.
- A program or website asks for PNG.
- You want to remove the background later. See JPG to transparent PNG.
The file will be large
A 12 megapixel iPhone photo is about 2 MB as HEIC and 20 MB or more as PNG. PNG stores every pixel exactly, so photos compress badly. For sharing or uploading, HEIC to JPG is almost always the better choice. If you must keep PNG but need a smaller file, use options with a maximum size on a JPG, or compress the PNG afterwards.
What is kept and what is not
- Kept: every pixel of the main photo and its correct rotation.
- Not copied: EXIF data such as date taken, camera model and location, plus Live Photo video and depth maps.
- Color depth: 10-bit HEIC photos are saved as 8-bit PNG, which looks the same on normal screens.
