Cover photo and profile picture work together
The profile picture overlaps the bottom-left corner of the cover, and phones crop the sides of the cover. Keep text in the center, leave the bottom-left empty and match the colors of both pictures. The cover size page has a safe-zone diagram and a desktop and phone preview, and the profile picture tool crops the circle for you.
Posts, links and stories
For a link post, the picture Facebook shows comes from the page's Open Graph image, so set an og:image of 1200 × 630. For photo posts, portrait 4:5 fills most of a phone screen. Stories and Reels are full-screen vertical at 1080 × 1920. See the post size page for the tool.
File types and quality
- JPG for photos, saved as sRGB.
- PNG for logos, charts and pictures with text, so edges stay sharp.
- Facebook recompresses uploads, so start from a clean file at the recommended size instead of a huge one.
- Many guides suggest keeping a cover under about 100 KB for a fast load. Large files are compressed harder.
Common mistakes
- Putting text near the edges of a cover, where phones crop it.
- Hiding a logo under the profile picture.
- Uploading a very tall or very wide image and letting Facebook crop it.
- Enlarging a small picture to fill a cover. Use a bigger original.
- Using a wide logo as a profile picture. The circle cuts the corners.
Checklist
- Cover 851 × 315 with the message in the middle.
- Profile picture square, 800 × 800, subject centered.
- Link image 1200 × 630.
- Feed posts square or 4:5.
- Stories 1080 × 1920.
- Check the result on desktop and on a phone.
