JPEG and JPG are the same format
JPEG is the name of the format. The extension is .jpg on files from older Windows versions, which allowed only three letters, and .jpeg on most others. They hold the same kind of image, and every program that opens one opens the other. This converter saves the file as .jpg. If a form asks for .jpeg, rename the file after downloading. Nothing else needs to change.
How to convert WebP to JPEG
- Drop the .webp files on the box or choose them from your device.
- They are converted at full size as soon as they are added.
- Download each JPEG, or all of them in one ZIP. A file called banner.webp becomes banner.jpg.
Why a website gave you a .webp file
Many sites serve images as WebP because it is smaller than JPG. If you save the picture from your browser, you get the WebP file instead of the JPG that the site once used. Some sites even show a JPG address, and your browser still receives WebP because it says it supports the format. Converting back to JPG is the simple fix when you need to attach the picture somewhere.
Quality settings in plain words
| Quality | Use it for |
|---|---|
| 95 | Print and archives |
| 90 | General use, the default |
| 85 | Websites and email |
| 75 | Small uploads and previews |
Because the WebP was already compressed, do not go far below 85 unless you need a small file. Each step down adds visible artifacts faster than on an original photo.
