Characters with and without spaces
The main number is the length of your text with the spaces taken out. The count with spaces is shown next to it, and the difference between the two is the amount of whitespace that was removed.
Characters without spaces = Characters in total − Whitespace characters
You choose what counts as a space
Programs do not agree on this, so the tool lets you pick:
- All whitespace (default): spaces, tabs, non-breaking spaces and line breaks are all left out. This matches the idea of counting only visible characters.
- Spaces and tabs only: line breaks still count as characters.
- Only the space character: tabs and line breaks still count.
If a rule says characters excluding spaces, check which of these it means, and pick the matching option, so your number agrees with the one the other side will count.
Where the count without spaces is used
- Translation and copywriting work that is priced per character without spaces.
- Academic and application forms that give a limit such as 1,500 characters excluding spaces.
- Comparing the real amount of content in two texts, regardless of how they are formatted.
- Checking the length of codes, IDs and numbers that were copied with spaces in them.
The text without spaces
Under the numbers you get your text with the spaces removed, and you can copy it with one click. It is useful for tidying a phone number, an account code, or a long key that was split in groups.
Example
| Text | With spaces | Without spaces |
|---|---|---|
| Count my characters | 19 | 17 |
To check a limit such as 280 characters with spaces, use the character counter. To count only the letters, use the letters only counter or the letter counter. The line counter and the word frequency counter cover lines and words, and the letter count guide has the formulas for spreadsheets.
